With a city that ranks No. 27 on Livability’s list of Best Places to Live in America in 2021, it’s no surprise ~226,610 people call Richmond home. With a population like that, where do all of these Richmonders eat, drink, play, and live?
We are setting out to answer that with RICtoday’s Neighborhood Guides. Much like our past guides to Jackson Ward, Church Hill, Shockoe Slip, and Manchester, this ongoing series will take you on an exploration of the communities that make Richmond feel like home.
We’ll dive into history, things to do and discover, places to park, where to live, and more to showcase some of the best qualities our unique neighborhoods have to offer. |

So, what do we define as a “neighborhood”?
While we love suburbs like Glen Allen + Bon Air, these guides will focus on small communities within our city (think: Carver and Forest Hill). These small but mighty parts of the River City typically feature restaurants, parks, living spaces, festivals, events, and more, and span one to a handful of blocks.
How will we choose what neighborhoods to cover?
This is where you come in. We are asking you to rave about all of your favorite neighborhood communities in the 804 — whether it's one you call home, always stop by with out-of-town visitors, or daydream about moving to. |

Ever wonder why Scott’s Addition gained popularity so quickly? We want to hear all about it + share the inside scoop with our readers. Head to the button below to point us in the direction of some of the best neighborhoods around town — from areas with rich history and unique architecture to the best places to retire or purchase your first home. |

VCUarts student Maggie Colangelo has created a short comic to honor the story of late Richmonder + veteran Russell Scott.
|
Maggie has done two other comics about Virginians making history. | Photo provided. |
Back in 1944, Scott leapt from his crashing B-52 plane during a battle over Italy. He was imprisoned in a German war camp for over a year.
Years later, he became a Virginia War Memorial volunteer before his death in 2019. There is now a 3D model of him at the memorial, sitting on the plane’s wing. Read her full comic.
