Last month, we kicked off our summer road trip series, Hit the Road, with an outdoor adventure to Shenandoah National Park. If you checked it out, we'd love to hear about it.
This month, we’re continuing the series with a 30-mile trip to Petersburg for a quick getaway. From Civil War history to award-winning barbecue, this nearby city offers a little bit of everything — making it the perfect end-of-summer stop. Here’s everything you need to know about the area + our insider recommendations. -

🎟️ Things to do Petersburg Company Walking Tours
Options for tours include an Old Towne walking tour, “High Street Hearsay” — aka the Gossip Tour — and “Lights, Camera, Petersburg.” Tickets start at $25.

🏨 Overnight accommodations

The Thomas Wallace House, corner of Market and Brown Streets
This 1855 home, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is where President Lincoln met with General Grant before the end of the Civil War. Enjoy four bedrooms + three bathrooms at an average price of $359 per night.

The bus-only lane painting project could wrap up by tomorrow — a month ahead of schedule. Crews are now working on the final stretch, the eastbound lane from Belvidere Street to Third Street. “Bus Only” markings will be added to the lanes in August. 🛑 (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

A new restaurant is serving up seafood in East Highland Park. Co-owner Michael Cox + chef Calvin Artis opened Jus Crab (2204 E. Laburnum Ave.) earlier this month. Try out the crab boil spot from 12-9 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. 🦀 (ABC8 News)
Biz -
Charm School is making moves. The Broad Street ice cream shop announced it will move to Scott’s Addition in September to focus on wholesale production. The new spot will have some form of retail, but will not be a scoop shop. The Forest Hill location will be unaffected by the move. 🍦
Number -
$8 million. That’s how much Maymont will receive from the US Dept. of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration. The nonprofit plans to use the grant money to fund infrastructure improvements, expand access to native wildlife habitats, and restore the roof of the Maymont Mansion. 💸
Community -
Public Works crews will be in Windsor Farms, UR + Far West End neighborhoods this Sat., July 23 from 8 a.m. until noon as part of the Neighborhood Clean-Up Program. Have things to throw away? They’ll accept anything except electronics, construction debris, hazardous waste, and broken glass. 🗑
Festival -
BrewHaHa is back for its fifth year at the VMHC. On Sat., Aug. 6, sample selections from VA breweries, enjoy tunes from the Slack Family Band + try new food trucks. Get tickets before this Sunday to beat the price increase. 🍺
Development -
The future of Leigh Addition is more clear thanks to a special-use permit request from local firm Poole & Poole Architecture. The development is a 305-unit, $80 million project on 3.3 acres near the intersection of Arthur Ashe Boulevard + Leigh Street. Get a look at the plans. 🏙 (Richmond BizSense)

A new program at Virginia State University seeks to address teacher shortages in Petersburg + Richmond. “I Too Teach” offers free tuition to graduate students in education who agree to serve as full-time substitute teachers. Health Outdoors -
Learn how to splash safely at River Safety Day. The water safety team from the Dept. of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities will answer questions and lead demonstrations on Sat., July 23 from 12-3 p.m. at Belle Isle. The event is free + open to the public.
