Editor's Pick: Did you know the first Thanksgiving was actually celebrated just miles from downtown Richmond?
According to historical records, colonists arrived at what’s now Berkeley Plantation in Charles City on Dec. 4, 1619. There was no feast, either. Just a religious ceremony to celebrate the company’s safe voyage that the English crew marked every year with prayer.
This story wasn’t recognized until President John F. Kennedy’s Thanksgiving Proclamation in November 1963.
