Tomorrow is National Dessert Day. To celebrate, weâve compiled a list of places to snag a sweet treat around the city.
Since the temps are getting lower, we left traditional ice cream parlors off this list â but check out our previous story for a few recommendations if youâre still craving something cold.
Sunflower Gardenz | 1810 Powhatan St.
Located right by Maymont, everything at this shop is 100% vegan â and 100% delicious. Order baked goods or consult with them to get a custom cake.
- Must try: The Apricot Agave Galette is calling our name.
Shyndigz Market & 2go Cafe | 1831 W. Cary St.
The main restaurant has been closed due to the pandemic, but the Fan market is still slinging sweets. Choose from their rotating schedule of cakes, or try a specialty dessert.
- Must try: Their pumpkin chocolate chip cake, on the monthly schedule for Oct. 20.

Karmelitaâs Confections | Various locations
The shop serves nut and seed free artisan marshmallow desserts. Karmelitaâs will be at the Lakeside Howl-o-ween Bash this Friday.
- Must try: The fall marshmallow varieties, including apple spice + caramel chai flavors.

- Thereâs now an open request for interest for creative development teams interested in redeveloping the 66.7 acres of The Diamond. The City of Richmond has also launched a website to keep citizens posted on the process, plans, and vision for the ongoing project. đ
- RVAgreen2050 is working with a Partnership for Smarter Growth for a Shockoe Walking Tour. Itâs planned for Sat., Oct. 16 at 11 a.m. to help locals learn about the neighborhoodâs historical past and how the community can support its future â such as the Shockoe Small Area Plan, a redevelopment design for the neighborhood.

- $77.5 million. Thatâs how much federal money the City of Richmond allocated last night in the Final American Rescue Plan Act budget amendment. The final plan includes $32 million for affordable housing, $5 million for a Health Equity fund, and $80 million invested in children and families. đž

- Midlothian Day Parade 2021 has been canceled due to concern around COVID-19 spread. This is the second time this parade got cut, the parade usually drawing a 2,500 person crowd. The Midlothian Festival at Midlothian Middle School will still be held on Sat., Oct. 16 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. (CBS6)

- Phil Mickelson will play in the Dominion Energy Charity Classic this month at The Country Club of Virginiaâs James River Course. Mickelson is a 6 time returning champion and the oldest golf player to ever win a major. âł (CBS6)

- Registration is open for the 2021 Richmond Walk to Defeat ALS on Sat., Oct. 23 at Brownâs Island. Organized through The ALS Association â DC/MD/VA Chapter, the walk will honor those battling ALS and aims to raise $125,000 for a treatment and a cure for the disease. đ

- A Halloween bike ride from RVA on Wheels + BASKET & BIKE will take place on Sat., Oct 30 and Sun., Oct 31. The 8-mile ride along the Virginia Capital Trail will include costumes, hot cider, and a tour of the haunted bed & breakfast Edgewood Plantation. Be sure to book in advance. đČ

According to @rtdnews, current owner Ward Tefft is selling this 20-year business of love + literature to a local couple, Berkely + Chris McDaniel, who have been regulars at the store for decades.

The only change the McDaniels plan on is a new inventory system. The name + store shall remain the same to regale Richmond readers young + old. đ
